If you measured 11.9 volts straight after a drive, that's worse than it sounds, because surface charge was propping it up. Measured cold after sitting overnight, it's a cleaner picture. The right multimeter setting for the job matters more than most people think.

This is the whole ballgame. A discharged battery recovers. A failed battery doesn't.

Cold slows the chemistry inside. At freezing temperatures, a battery loses cranking power and reads slightly lower than it would when warm. A discharged battery is also far more likely to freeze, which can crack the case.

Storage is the other culprit. A parked car, boat, or mower self-discharges over weeks. Flooded batteries lose roughly 4 to 6 percent a month, faster in heat.
